Today we had the privilege of taking Synnova out to spread the ashes of Gary Ericksen. Gary and his family have been longtime friends of ours. Gary helped Bob start the RC Ship Modelers club about 35 years ago. Since that time we have gotten to know his wife, Ruth, and daughter, Marilyn, who has babysat for us, joined us in church activities and is our church custodian. We had not yet met Paul, his wife, Lenni, or their son, PJ, but everyone joined us for this special occasion.
Bob took us out between Hat Island off the Mukilteo area. We learned that Gary had gone to school there at one time. This seemed an appropriate place to bury his ashes at sea so we all gathered on the stern of the boat. I had brought some carnations that I handed out to everyone and then said a prayer of blessing over this time and committed Gary to the Lord's care. Paul then set the urn in the water and we watched it sink below the surface. Everyone threw out their flower as they reflected on Gary's life.
It was a short but meaningful time and we were honored to be asked to help them complete this final task to honor Gary's memory. He would have loved it out there having been in the Navy and also an avid ship model builder.
