As soon as we finished breakfast and got our kayaks off the top of Synnova we headed out for a little kayaking around the bay in hopes of seeing a bear. No luck this time but it is amazing how beautiful it is and what a different perspective one gets from a kayak. It is so peaceful. I like kayaking in these coves where I don't have to worry about ferry boats and other marine traffic. It's just me and nature. I'm looking forward to a lot more kayaking the next couple of weeks.
While we were eating lunch we noticed an eagle soaring overhead so I grabbed the camera and managed to get a couple of shots of him. They are so plentiful up here but I never cease to be amazed at how they soar. They are so majestic looking.
This evening we ordered pizza from the Red Shoe Pub. The restaurant and store are under construction after the barge sunk two years ago. They are working toward rebuilding and hope to be up and running at full capacity very shortly. While eating dinner we got talking to George and he told us the story of how the Red Shoe Pub got its name. He had a neighbor who died a few years ago that was a mentor to him when he first moved up here. The neighbor had a red spiked heel shoe hanging from a tree. When George would ask the neighbor what it was there for, he would tell him it was his lucky horseshoe. Not until later did George realize what he actually said was “his lucky whore shoe”. George decided to name his pub in honor of his neighbor. Apparently, at some time in the distant past there was a “house of ill repute” in the area that serviced the loggers and fishermen who came by. A red shoe was hung in a tree to let them know where the “ladies” were. The pub has red shoes in every window and as soon as it is rebuilt he has many more shoes that are in storage that will also be displayed. They are left by boaters who visiting the marina and want to join in the fun.
After dinner the ladies stayed in the restaurant and set up a couple tables to play cards. We played a rousing game of Blitz while the men met on Jack's boat, turned on the western channel and visited. Both groups had a great time and were happy to not be in the other group!
