We left
Brentwood at 6:30am to head over to Silva Bay for a noon arrival. We wanted to hit slack tide in Gabriola
Passage at 11:37 and we timed it perfectly. As we approached Silva Bay the tide
was low and it was easy to see Shipyard Rock (also known as Shipwreck Rock for
a reason). Thank goodness Bob knows what he is doing, reads his charts and pays attention to the channel marker.
When we
docked our boats it was pretty tight for Smiths and Martins to get in to their slips
because their finger piers were perpendicular to a long dock next to it. There
was a sailboat in front of Smiths’ boat but Al was able to get in because he
had two slips width to work with. Then Larry came in and had a very tight turn
to make to get in to his slip next to Al.They got docked fine but then later in
the afternoon a very wide boat tied up directly in front the Martins. Larry and
Al went and talked to the dock master and told her that there was no way they
could pull out of their slips in the morning at 7:00am with the other boats
tied up there. At first she insisted it was never a problem for boats to get
out but with further persuasion she relented. She had the two boats on the linear
dock untie and move out of the way. Then Larry and Al moved their boats to two
slips next to the rest of us. It was a
really tight fit getting them out but it worked out and we were better set for
the morning departure.
We had a fun
evening sharing dinner on our boat and then Canons brought over their ice cream
stash for us all to enjoy. Mary and Jerome Robbins are joining us for part of
our trip up to the Broughtons. They had been in charge of the hamburger
barbecue we ate at Mill Bay with the Commodore’s Cruise and had quite a bit of
food left over. Mary brought it over so we could make our dinner out of the
leftovers and save our provisions for when we get up to the Broughtons and food
is harder to come by. We had a great
time visiting and shared how the Canons, Smiths, Martins and we ended up cruising
together each summer. We also reminisced about how Bob and I met both the
Smiths and Canons at a Nordic Tug rendezvous and encouraged them to join the
Edmonds Yacht Club. A very good move on our part for the benefit of the club as
well as for developing deep friendships with them.
